Why I do what I do

Why I do what I do

Since I just moved from one military base in Japan to a new military base in New Jersey,  I have been trying to re-establish my business.  Since it has been a little slower going than I would like, I have had plenty of time to think about why I do what I do, and I think I may have figured it out.

I believe there is an inherent need to communicate in all of us, despite age, despite any challenges or disabilities we may face.  I think the need to communicate exists in all of us.  I want to bring that ability to everyone.  I love when parents realize that their pre-verbal child has an entire world that they want to share, and are so much smarter than the parents could have imagined.  My heart fills with joy every time an autistic student of mine looks at me and signs, and knows that I understand them.  I want to hug every senior who is recovering from a stroke, that now can communicate their most basic needs because of sign.

I truly feel sign language is a beautiful gift that the deaf community gave to the rest of the world.  This gift, I feel us sitting on a shelf under utilized by most of the world.  I want to share a spread this amazing communication tool to all, so everyone has the ability to understand each other.  By learning Sign Language and spreading this gift from the Deaf community, it also gives right back.  By learning just a few signs, you can open your world to new friends or experiences.  Knowing just a few signs doesn’t take much effort, but can mean so much to a person who uses sign as their main way to communicate.

I do what I do in the hopes that I can help make this world a little bit easier to understand for everyone, of every age, and every ability.  Just about everyone can sign and be understood!

Another Passion of Mine

Another Passion of Mine

I am mad about all things natural parenting.  I loved breastfeeding, I still baby wear, I feed my family as much homemade natural food I can and I cloth diaper.  I have more than once got the “ewww, what do you do with the poop” or “isn’t that a lot of extra work”, and the famous “cloth diapers are just too expensive”.  I always love when I get “oh my goodness, her diapers are sooo cute!”, which I also get often.  I enjoy every one of these comments, because it opens the door to discussing how great cloth diapering can actually be (and I have to admit, addicting).

Though it was a bit of an investment up front, my husband has been thrilled every time we can simply bypass the diaper aisle  in the store.   I couldn’t imagine having to pre-plan having enough diapers for a week/month/year, however long you purchase diapers in advance for.  If I run low on diapers, I just do a load of laundry.  I never have a dirty poopy diaper smell lingering at the trash can, because poop goes in the toilet, where it belongs.  Going out for the day isn’t really any more difficult with cloth diapers.  I carry a diaper bag with a zippered wet bag inside to put dirty diapers in, and they get washed when we get home.  If I want to be lazy, I will use a hybrid diaper.  A hybrid uses a washable outer shell along with a disposal and biodegradable insert.  When your little one goes, you just remove the liner, replace with a new one, wipe baby clean and go.

Wanna get a Dad on board with cloth diapering? If the money savings don’t convince him, how about a fun diaper sprayer? A diaper sprayer is a nifty little device that connects to the side of the toilet.  It is kinda like an adjustable sprayer head on your shower, but attached to your toilet to spray away any yuckies on your diapers.  I have met more than one Dad who refused to pay $40 for a diaper sprayer, went to Home Depot, and built their own and had a blast doing it.

Exciting Thing Coming!

Exciting Thing Coming!

This has been a very exciting week indeed!  Enrollments have started for my classes being offered in partnership with Hear My Hands, I have been invited to teach on Joint Base McGuire/Dix/Lakehurst, and today I reached out to Popcorn Park Zoo to do a “Signing At The Zoo” event, and they jumped at the idea.  Hopefully this summer you will have the opportunity to take a class from me at the Discovery Museum or at Little Sports, enjoy a military discounted class at JBMDL and have some fun learning animal signs at Popcorn Park Zoo!  Who knows what else I will find to keep me busy and to grow Shooting Star Signers!

Welcome to My New Website!

156864_480483648673733_947329208_nThank you for joining me in my new teaching adventures in New Jersey!  I have been teaching for years in Japan, and have now brought my unique, fun and interactive classes stateside!

I thought it was fitting to launch my new Website in conjunction with Autism Awareness Day/Month.  I loved teaching early communication to babies (and still do).  I found a passion that truly fulfilled me.  While teaching Baby Sign and Play Classes, I was offered the opportunity to teach in a Special Needs class 3 times a week.  Though I had no experience working with Autistic children, I jumped at the chance.  I was lucky to have a wonderful special needs instructor to teach and guide me in how to best improve the communication of my new wonderful students.

I found equal passion in this task, as I did teaching babies.  Just as I love seeing feelings, needs and wants communicated with pre-verbal babies, I learned I equally love seeing this in ALL people.  I was so sad to leave Japan and the students that I had grown so found of. The rewards I received were immense.  I will never forget the feeling I got one day (after months of working with these kids0.  One of my students turned to me and both signed and verbalized “Hi Ms. Shannon”.  These were the first words I had ever heard from him, and I was almost brought to tears.  I later discovered (from reports from his parents and teacher) that the ability to communicate through sign, had given him the confidence to speak.  I am not saying that sign will give every child on every area on the spectrum the ability to speak, but it does help.

Please feel free to share your inspiring stories!
