Welcome to Shooting Star Signers.
My goal is to increase communication for all. My name is Shannon, and I have been signing with my daughter since she was 4 months old. Now, 4 years later, she is equally fluent in ASL (American Sign Language), and English. When I started teaching my daughter, I had no experience with ASL. I taught myself a few signs with the help from the internet and just tried to keep a sign ahead of her. If she seemed to develop an interest in a particular object, I would quickly look up the sign in my now trusted Signing dictionary. At 5 months old she showed me her first sign (milk). The look on her face when she signed to me and realized that I understood her was priceless. As my friends saw the amazing communication that my daughter, husband and I had, they wanted in too. I was hosting an informal playgroup in my house where my friends and I would fuel up on coffee and sign everything we could to our children. We signed books, we signed the names of our children’s favorite toys, we signed everything we ate and fed our growing kids. We had so much fun doing it, that my ever supportive husband suggested that I find a way to turn my passion into a career that could include my daughter.
After a lot of thinking and internet research, I found that the Signing Time Academy! My daughter and I had already watched some of the Signing Time videos and loved them, and I learned that I could become a qualified and certified Sign Language Instructor. With more help and support from my husband, I threw myself into my formal Sign Language education. I studied diligently during baby naps and at night. In addition to my college level ASL courses, I studied how to teach sign to all ages and abilities. After much hard work, I am now a Master certified instructor, and have experience teaching babies, toddlers as well as special needs children.
I have been fortunate enough to have taught many babies and their parents the joy of early communication. I love seeing how the parents and children respond to knowing what the other is communicating. Every class, I am amazed at just how smart all my students are, and how the babies love to share the world around them as they see it. There is nothing like having your small child smile, sign bird and point a beautiful robin that they have noticed and you didn’t.
I have been privileged to bring communication to families who were frustrated from lack of language. I have worked with families with non-verbal autistic children, and helped to unlock their world. I have helped elderly individuals, who have been struggling with recovery from stroke, communicate their needs. Every one of these experiences have made me a better, more knowledgable teacher. I have been the student in so many of these situations.
Please feel free to contact me about your signing needs.
